Magnetic Fields

PHY 201 & 231

Students will use permanent magnets as well as an electromagnet along with a compass to view the generated magnetic field lines. They will also have some practice with the Lorentz force.

Equipment

Name Location Quantity
Compass JE-105A-S135,S46 1 per table
Power Supply, Extech (Model #382213) JE-105A-X12/13 1 per table
Wires, Banana, Black, 55cm In Front of JE105, JE107, JE109 1 per table
Wires, Banana, Red, 55cm In Front of JE105, JE107, JE109 1 per table
Magnet, Ceramic, Dowling, 4.7x2.2cm JE-105A-S75 1 per table
Coil, Inductor (Heath/Coilcraft) JE-105A-S53 1 per table
Magnet, Horseshoe JE 105A - S-75 1 per table

Notes

Each table should have one bar magnet and one horseshoe magnet. The bar magnet used should be roughly 5cm X 2 cm X 1 cm and is visible in the picture. If 55 cm wires are unavailable other lengths can be used.
